On his show, The Draymond Green Show, the Golden State Warriors’ power forward, Draymond Green interviewed Sam Cassell. During the conversation, Rondo was praised by Green as “one of the greatest basketball thinkers that I’ve seen”.
Throughout his career, which has spanned years, Green has been lucky to work with some of the best minds in basketball. Coaches such as Steve Kerr and Mark Jackson have guided him. Furthermore, Green has played alongside other outstanding players like Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Chris Paul.
He has, therefore, obviously had a lot of exposure to some great talents on the court, both as teammates and opponents; this amplifies his respect for Rondo’s thinking abilities in basketball.
Rondo’s Impactful Legacy
Looking at Rondo’s credentials is enough to understand how important he is to NBA history.
A four-time NBA All-Star and two-time NBA Champion who is currently ranked 15th all-time in assists. His defense skills have been well-documented since he won steals leading that category back in 2010. However, what makes him stand out is his incredibly high basketball IQ above it all.
At the same time as retirement approaches or sets in, a good example would be Rondo, whose game was always said to be about intelligence on the court. Rondo’s early days were characterized by exceptional leadership qualities and an understanding of basketball, according to Sam Cassell.
“It was his second year. His leadership quality and thought process in the game of basketball were unbelievable,” recalled Cassell, emphasizing how much impact Rondo had on others around him. Green also wants to take a deeper dive into Rondo’s knowledge about basketball.
“I’m praying I get the chance to sit down with him and talk basketball,” said Green who respects Rondo extremely highly if not reveres him.Cassell added that he could easily step into coaching if he wanted saying he made his point.
His basketball thinking is unrivaled so he could join an NBA coaching staff in the near future, wouldn’t be a surprise right?
